A long time between home games for the University of Louisville women’s basketball team. Probably a good thing, giving the players time to mature and gel. The last time they played at the KFC Yum! Center was three weeks ago, UofL lost to North Carolina State by 30 points. Not much fun for anyone, including the winner of that game.
Different story Wednesday night. The Cardinals jumped on top of Miami early, claiming a 19-6 lead before the Hurricanes knew what hit them. They would not let up, dominant in every phase of the game, in claiming a 74-56 win. Good times for them and the crowd of 7,956 Cardinals faithfuls.
Good omen for UofL basketball was Jayda Curry finding her shooting eye beyond the 3-point line. She would connect on four of nine 3-point attempts and six of 12 elsewhere, winding up with 21 points for the game. That was what she was known for at Southern Cal before transferring to UofL last season. The Cardinals desperately needed to improve their long-distance shooting.
Tajianna Roberts would collect all of her 14 points in the second quarter to keep Miami at arm’s length. Her total included a couple of 3-pointers. She also had four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Olivia Cochran scored in double figures for the third straight game with 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting and tied a season high with three steals. Facing her former team, Ja’Leah Williams added eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists to go with four steals.
The Louisville women are 9-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Miami is 11-3 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.
