One more win against Kentucky for the University of Louisville volleyball. Getting to be a habit, four in a row over the Wildcats. Especially sweet in Lexington in $80 million renovated Memorial Coliseum. Thanks for spiffing up the place.
Puzzling, though, that the official attendance was only 3,838 in an arena with a capacity of 8,500 seats. Not much of a reception for a match pitting No. 4 Louisville against the 11th ranked team in the land. Volleyball country in Lexington, not so much, at least on Monday.
High levels of intensity of the court, however. Louisville winning 3-1, taking the first two sets 25-21 and 25-18 before dropping the third set to UK 20-25. No doubt in the fourth set with the Cardinals rolling to an early 13-6 lead, eventually crushing the Wildcats 25-16.
“I do not think we passed great but we held our own,” said UofL Coach Dani Busboon-Kelly. “We knew they were such a good serving team and they would score points there and it would be hard to sideout. We knew we would have to block balls and that is what we did. We just had to play great defense. We knew what we had to do to combat that advantage. I think they are the best serving team in the country. I was very concerned about that coming in.”
Good time for fifth-year senior Anna DeBeer to assert her dominance in the series. The ever cool, unflappable DeBeer in her last regular season appearance the Wildcats coming through with 13 kills, an ace and 12 digs. She’s always the focus of the opposition and it only serves to make her more durable and stronger.
Sophomore Reese Robins hit .556 with 11 kills on 18 swings. Junior Cara Cresse added six kills and nine blocks. Junior Elle Glock and freshman Nayelis Cabello combined for 37 assists. Senior libero Elena Scott coming through time and time again with a match-high 20 digs.
No rest in the immediate future, fifth-ranked Nebraska coming to the KFC Yum! Center at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
