Just an amazing phenomenon to behold, the continuing resurgence of University of Louisville basketball. Clemson is the latest victim, humbled by the Cardinals 74-64 in front of 14,991 fans Tuesday evening at the KFC Yum! Center.
UofL basketball is fun again, with J’Vonne Hadley leading the way in this game. The fifth-year senior scoring a career high 32 points to lead all scorers. He would score seven points in a row at one point in the first half, with UofL overcoming a six-point deficit with 14 straight points.
The loss was Clemson’s first in Atlantic Coast Conference play after five games, with an overall won-lost record of 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the ACC. Louisville is now 11-5 overall and also 4-1 in conference play.
Hadley’s point total is the most by a player in an ACC game this season. He made 10 of 12 from the floor with a perfect 3 for 3 clip from the arc. He also conneted on nine of 11 free throws and added three assists, 10 rebounds for a double-double and a steal in his 36 minutes.
“I think the big story should be J’Vonne Hadley,” said UofL Coach Pat Kelsey. “ He was sensational. Somebody said 32 points is the most anyone has scored in the ACC so far this year. What is crazy is that is not even his calling card. He is a jack of all trades and in so many ways he was dominant tonight on the backboard and scoring the ball.”
Kelsey also had high praise for Terrence Edwards’ defensive efforts, limiting Clemson’s leading scorer Chase Hunter to 15 points. “He is guarding the best player on the other team night in and night out. His shooting numbers aren’t what they typically are, and as you know he is a very talented scorer. He has been sensational, just terrific on defense. We are fortunate to beat a very good team.”
Chucky Hepburn was at his best at point guard, coming through with nine points, seven assists, three rebounds and three steals. James Scott added the wow factor at key points, with five dunks on his way to 11 points.
Louisville is on the road against Pittsburgh for a noon tip off on Saturday. The game will be broadcast by ESPN2.
