Two runaway victories against mediocre opponents do not provide a basis for any conclusions about the University of Louisville women’s basketball team. But one has to admit the Cardinals were impressive in their first two outings.
UofL demolished Bellarmine University 119-47 in the opener and followed it up with an 87-35 roasting of Stetson University. Their first wins living up to Coach Jeff Walz’s previews of what he has described as a very deep and talented team.
The Cardinals roared out of the gate against Bellarmine, running up a score of 44-9 in the first quarter. The 119 points were the highest final score in UofL history and the 44 points were the most ever in Louisville women’s basketball history. UofL shot 17-for-28 (61%) from the field, 5-for-10 (50%) from deep while holding the Knights to two field goals in the quarter.
Tajianna Roberts led the way with 15 points, going 7-for-12 (58%) from the field in 19 minutes of play. Imari Berry, Amiya Joyner, Carys Baker, Zamareya Jones, Ariyana Cradle and Grace Mbugua also finished in double figures.
After a slow first half against Stetson, UofL went to the locker room with a score of 40-20 lead. The Cardinals shifted into high gear in the second half, going on a 24-2 run to start the half, holding Stetson scoreless for over 5 minutes. Louisville was led in scoring by Berry, Roberts and Jones with 16, 14 and 11 points respectively.
Almost too easy, keeping the wins in perspective is highly recommended.
